Aquamarine is the birthstone for the month of March. It derives its name due to its color resembling that of sea water. The ancient Sumerians, Egyptians and Hebrews admired and valued aquamarine greatly. It was a symbol of happiness and everlasting youth for them. The majority of aquamarine gems are found in Brazil. The largest Aquamarine weighing around 110kgs was found in 1910, at Marambaia, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Other important deposits of Aquamarine are in Madagascar, Nigeria and the Ural mountains of Russia.
In ancient times, it was often worn by sailors as a talisman for good luck and protection, and they referred to it as the ‘treasure of mermaids’. Traditionally it as considered to enhance one’s oratorical skills and soothe breathing problems.
