Garnet are considered as one of the most valued gemstones in semi-precious category due to their attractive brilliance and hardness. Garnet is the birth stone for the month of January. The name is derived from the Latin word “Granatus” meaning ‘like grain’. Garnet is commonly found to be red in colour, although they exist in many other different colors and chemical formulas. However, all the different varieties of garnets share one thing in common, their ingrain crystalline structure.
One of the most recently discovered colors of garnet is the rare blue garnet which is discovered in late 1990’s in Madagascar. It has subsequently been found in many other places of the world including USA, Russia, Kenya, Tanzania and Turkey.
