Moonstone has been revered as a precious stone for centuries by ancient civilizations. The Romans venerated the moonstone, as they believed it was born from the solidification of rays of the Moon. Both the Romans and Greeks associated Moonstone with their Lunar Gods. In recent history, the moonstone gained prominence during the Art Nouveau period.
Moonstone is usually found in Armenia, Australia, the Austrian Alps, Mexico, Madagascar, Myanmar, India and Sri Lanka. It is the state gemstone of Florida State, USA, in honour of the Moon landings, which were launched from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.
It is more delicate than other gemstones, and as such should be handled and cleaned with care. Blue Moonstone is thought to be productive in clearing sleep disorders. Traditionally it is viewed as a harbinger of serenity, calmness and emotional balance, and boosts creativity.
